If you download the Matroska link to the right, you will get a mkv-file with optional subtitles, which you can play with a vlc-player on your computer. Helmut Käutner’s debut film, though not as well known as some of his later works like “Große Freiheit Nr.7” or “Unter den Brücken”, shows astonishing assurance and wit. The setting is Lugano (Switzerland), where an apparently very important world conference  takes place. The film tells the story of the young Kitty (Hannelore...

If you download the Matroska link to the right, you will get a mkv-file with optional subtitles, which you can play with a vlc-player on your computer. A film about the pupils of a posh Berlin gymnasium in their final term (Ober-Primaner = pupils of the Upper First) and their class teacher/mentor/confessor teaching them about humanism and tolerance, a lesson that would be badly needed three years later. The teacher is this time not played by Jannings but by the equally great Theodor Loos. The...

Here's an early sound showcase for Emil Jannings from an older tape TV recording in agreeable quality. "Der Herr auf Bestellung" has the Weimar dream team of Walter Reisch as scriptwriter, Geza von Bolvary as director and most importantly, the incomparable Willi Forst as main actor.  This 'musical burlesque' tells about a stylish young gentleman (Willi Forst) who works as a so-called 'Festredner'; an untranslatable term, it indicates a...

Without English subtitles!  This comedy features Dolly Haas in the role of a young Countess who takes on the role of her brother and goes to military school for him. No one notices that the boy is a girl but problems arise when a new officer (Gustav Fröhlich) arrives at the regiment and the Countess begins to feel quite womanly about him. Furthermore, the 'boy' is asked to play a girl in some little stage production, and in the end even the Emperor comes in to sort out the troubles…...

If you download the Matroska link to the right, you will get a mkv-file with optional subtitles, which you can play with a vlc-player on your computer. Although the credits of the film only give Heinrich George as a director, the film was only started by the actor, but was finished by Werner Hochbaum. If you download the Matroska link to the right, you will get a mkv-file with optional subtitles, which you can play with a vlc-player on your computer. Rare Weimar comedy in less than stellar quality, but this film is worth it. If you download the Matroska link to the right, you will get a mkv-file with optional subtitles, which you can play with a vlc-player on your computer. Truly excellent and perhaps the most 'intellectual' film by Forst, a film that's almost a meditation on the relationship between reality and representation. That goes for many films by Forst, but seldom more explictly than here. Can we regard the 'bad' Willi as just a 'copy' of the 'good' Willi (which we most likely do when we watch the film)?...

Nice little crime comedy romance with a rather ambitious script and a retrospectively quite convincing regie. My only problem was the two female main characters, which are just not my taste (also the entire cast seems to have dental problems, I already noticed that in those early Heesters films). O.W.Fisher, an obvious Austrian version of the popular Heesters-type, does his job well, but the credit goes mainly to script, director and cinematographer, who put the action mostly into the right...

This one took me by surprise as I didn't expect anything. The film has a good tempo, good performances and directing but it was the script that stood out here. The dialogues, especially the use of words and characterizations seemed unusual and original. The film was written by Josef Maria Frank who had also written Staudte's "Der Mann, dem man den Namen stahl". I gave the comedy tag but it has a rather serious or realistic tone. It's hard with this one as I wouldn't really call it a...

The story is about a couple where succeedingly each one wrongly suspects the other being unfaithful. That's only modestly intriguing especially since Holt and Markus don't exactly set the screen on fire. However Lingen is not the worst director, he occasionally throws in some nice shots which tell the story visually, there are some good dry gags as well though also some forced comedy, too.

The story follows Fontane's novel with Hatheyer's young woman pushing Viktor Staal's lazy law student to success until he becomes a mayor of a city. I'd say this is a stolid, respectable film but not terribly involving. Staal is curiously disinterested in everything and so untalented that you begin to wish that Hatheyer herself could work her way up instead of prodding along this man. There are no major conflicts on the way and the final story twists aren't helped by the fact that the copy is...

Another Überläufer, "Umwege zu Dir" (or "Umweg zu Dir", how this one is actually called) was shot and produced in 1944/45 but only released in 1947. It's a dramatic romance about a woman running away from her true love. Acceptable film with a good working pace and script. The Austrian atmosphere is very charming. It's Zochs last film as a scriptwriter.

The film is a mixture of a Lysistrata version and a romance between rich girl and poor boy. The comedy parts are rough, broad and everything bad you'd associate with this kind of Heimatfilm stuff. Heavy accents also, not always easy to understand. The romance is at least bolstered by the vivacious Charlotte Schellhorn though this film makes you even more sad that she committed suicide at 23 in 1945.

Personally my greatest discovery among those neglected third reich films this year, no doubt. A truly funny and more than well-paced comedy that made me and my co-viewers laugh and cry. I actually hate Albach-Retty, but here he rightfully fills in a gap with his pretentious style of acting. The plot evolves around the repercussions of a 25 year old infidelity that has quite some influence on the family life. I don't want to give away anything else. The cast speaks for itself and Deppe again...

Losely based on Christine and Irrungen und Wirrungen by Fontane. Released on the 30th of march 1945 this must be one of the last films, that premiered during the third reich and a quite unusually one. The urge for enduring motives towards the end of the regime seems to have had grown so big, that even romantic and anti-nationalsocialist themes like the romantic impossibility of a misalliance (the flower girl and the prince) are exploited. Despite the shallow basic motive Buch delivered quite a...

Here's a digital recording so we can ... ahem, enjoy this heimatfilm. The story is very simple, an old peasant and his farm hand who is like an adoptive son for him compete for the attentions of a young woman.  The film needs quite some time to get started so the viewer has ample opportunity to notice the broad acting, the cringeworthy dialogue and melodramatic cliches. Attila Hörbiger plays the young man with his usual slightly dumb expression while Ilse Exl is a rather unlikely reason for...

West German version of the movie (also a sovexport version does exist) This copy is another cut of the film starting with the FWMS logo but also a totally anachronistic opening music. It has scenes and shots which the Sovexport is missing and vice versa. The scenes are also cut in a different way and it's impossible to tell the original sequence without consulting the script. Judging from certain scenes I guess that the Sovexport is closer to the original cutting, but the beginning must be...

Essentially the film is about two fathers who have promised each other their children. Both aren't rich and think mistakenly the other has a lot of money while the children are understandably sceptical and first argue a lot. Additionally for a pretty stupid reason Josef Eichheim play a role in drag and obviously one of the oldmen falls in love with him. Evene if you lower your expectations this is only very modestly funny.
